The prompt for Illustration Friday this week is “Space”. So naturally the first thing that came to my mind was outer space with its lovely purple skies, bright stars and colorful planets. Then there’s always the aliens andĀ  little astronauts with their space ships. All of that especially cameĀ  to my mind first because I just finished the final work on the space pages of the book I’m illustrating. Though tempting to do more, I wanted to do something different. I decided instead to give homage to the “creative inner space” that at least for this artist/writer can drive to distraction.

When I was somewhere, oh about in the second grade, my mother got my report card. I was doing well in school it said; except for the fact that I was constantly daydreaming. I had this little habit of whispering stories to myself at night too. I still make up stories but now I have the good sense to write them down or draw them.

This drawing challenged me. I am still not quite sure I have the perspectives worked out properly. But there is only so much you can do in a few days, especially with other illustrations on the drawing board. Perhaps I’ll get out my ruler sometime and tweak it to perfection, but for now it’s here in answer to the Illustration Friday prompt. I hope you enjoy it.

Here’s closer look at some of the detail that might not show up once the internet crunches my pictures:

Originally the dragon girl was more vibrantly colored but she resides farther back in the picture than the mermaid so needed to be toned down according to rules of perspective.

I LOVE IT!!! it’s got so much going on and I love all the details. I used to whisper stories to myself at night too.. seemed to push back the darkness and keep the monsters hidden under the bed!

:) Thank you, Tee. I suppose we could say it’s better to whisper a story than to curse the darkness, right? All jokes aside, I find a bit of profundity in that statement.
